Electromagnetic Radiation and Electromagnetic Fields – Keeping Your Family Safe
Dr Julie McCredden PhD is an expert on the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and electromagnetic fields (EMF) on children and adolescents.

She says humans are now bathed in man made electromagnetic fields.

"We know children and babies are being exposed from a very, very young age," she says.

"In the US more than a third of babies at six months use computerised toys, smartphones and tablets."

Dr McCredden, also the President of ORSAA, believes if parents could see all the electromagnetic fields coursing through an average classroom they would be horrified.

"They are exposed to that three to five hours a day and when they go home another four hours," she says.

Presenting at the 2020 ACNEM Online Conference: Environmental and Viral Disruptors Dr McCredden explains what EMRs and EMFs are, and the harmful effects of human exposure to them.

She explains how and why human bodies are vulnerable to EMFs including effects at a cellular level but most importantly what parents can do to keep their children safe.
What is the problem?
Dr McCredden says 22 out of 81 papers have shown negative effects of EMFs on children including:

Sleep and wellbeing: headache, migraines, fatigue, sleep disturbances

Mood, mental health and behavioural effects: Behavioural conduct problems, increased behavioural difficulties, depression, anxiety

Cognitive effects: perception (audio and visual), neuromuscular and cognitive functions

Dr McCredden explores numerous research papers into the harmful effects of EMFs and shockingly she reveals a long-term Bavarian study (Buchner, K., & Eger H. 2011) on a community exposed to a cell phone base station. The researchers found an increase in sleep problems, vertigo, concentration problems and allergies among all the exposed children.

"They reported as a population the people were starting to show the beginning stages of chronic exhaustion and stress. That is what was happening to the children just from one base station being put up in their town," she says.
What to do?
Dr McCredden says by taking a few simple steps you can ensure your home is mostly free from damaging electromagnetic fields.

She recommends the following:
  • Disable all signals (Airplane mode ON, turn location services OFF, disable Bluetooth pairing) when not in use
  • Do not give iPhones or tablets to children unless the signals are disabled
  • Check messages after breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner then put phone back onto Airplane Mode
  • NOTE: Turning your smartphone OFF will not disable signals; it will just turn off the apps and software on the phone. There is no need to turn off your phone after you have disabled the antenna so you can still use your camera etc
  • Do not use wired headsets connected to phones as they bring the EMRs directly into your brain and increase the risk of tumours
  • Airtube headsets are safe as they use air pressure
Tips for families to reduce and retreat from EMR/EMF exposure
  • At night or when not in use disconnect modems from the wall
  • Pregnant women to avoid using iPhones and tablets
  • Do not use iPhones or tablets next to your children
  • Throw out baby monitors – one of the highest emitters of signals
  • Limit the use of cell (mobile) phones and cordless phones for young people to less than 15 minutes daily and use speaker phone for longer use
  • Do not put your phone next to your bed
  • Ethernet connections to laptops and PCs
  • Purchase an ELF and RF-EMR meter
  • Don't use a phone in low signal areas or in a car or bus
  • Stay 50cm away from a screen
For practitioners:
Dr McCredden says practitioners must firstly believe their patients when they present with symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

"Electromagnetic fields are a contributing factor to oxidative stress and inflammation," she says.

"I would put electromagnetic fields up there with glyphosate and heavy metals in regard to how they are affecting us and the problems involved in overcoming their ubiquitousness."

Have you ever considered where your patients live could be making them sick? Do you ask them how close they live to heavy traffic or if they are near a cell phone tower? Building biologist Nicole Bijlsma says clinicians need to know more about the proven health hazards lurking in our homes.

More Australians are reportedly suffering severe psychological distress due to COVID-19 as are individuals in China, Italy, Norway and the US. The Australian National University has tracked the mental health of Australians and found higher levels of psychological distress and serious mental illness, particularly in young adults, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
